Fortunately, PITT OHIO hadn’t scheduled Nelson’s run to start until tomorrow. An hour later, Officer Girard, an equally sizable man, marched the suspect into Interview A. With Owens helping West clean up after Webber’s cold cases, Jenna turned to Jamison. “How are you coming with prepping for your detective’s exam?” she asked.

“It’s going OK … I think. But boss, you and Detective Owens talked to this guy before. He won’t take me seriously.”

“Exactly.” Jenna flashed her a wicked grin. “He’ll be more likely to let something slip with you. Here’s my notes from the first interview.” She crossed the room and handed them to Jamison. “I’ll be in the booth listening and will join you at the right moment.”

She swallowed and lifted hesitant green eyes to Jenna. “You want me to question him by myself?”

Jenna granted her a confident nod. “It’s after five. He’ll think the senior detectives are off the clock. It’s alright if you’re nervous—I want you to look that way to him. You’re smart, Trisha. You’ve got this, and I’ll be just a step away.”

“Thanks, Ferrari,” she replied with a smile. “I’ll get him to slip up somehow.”

Jenna watched Nelson’s irritated, angry demeanor spin on a dime when the lovely, uncoplike Trisha Jamison walked in on her heels with a model’s legs peeking from beneath her knee-length skirt. He straightened, smoothed back his hair, and smiled at her. “I didn’t know they were sending me over a pretty lawyer,” he commented.

She slid into the seat across the table from him with the door at her back. “Oh, I’m not from the Public Defender’s Office,” she responded with a friendly smile. “I’m Officer Jamison from criminal investigations. Did Officer Girard review your rights with you?”

“Yeah,” he groaned with regret. Still, he seemed eager to speak with this pretty young investigator. “I thought the other detectives were done asking me questions. I cooperated and everything.”

“Yes, sir, you did, Mr. Nelson, and we really appreciate it, too.” Jenna smiled as she listened to Jamison’s smooth-as-honey inflections. Then Trisha scrunched up her face in confusion and referred to the notes. “Now, didn’t you tell them you never went to Mr. Perez’s house?”

“That’s right,” he clipped in a more formal tone. “We were in a public area when I had it out with him, in the parking lot of his gym.”

Jamison nodded. “That’s what these interview notes say, which is why I’m confused.” She picked up the fingerprint report and showed it to him. “See, specialist Marcus gave me this a little while ago, showing your fresh, unmistakable prints on the back window of Mr. Perez’s patio door. So I have to ask if maybe you recall something else, some other time you might have been in his backyard spying through a window? I mean, if you suspected he was up to no good with your wife, didn’t you have the right to check up on him?”

“Well.” He fidgeted with his fingers on the tabletop, glancing away from Jamison, and wiggled in his chair.
